Tax Ruling

Global Medical Education (GME) can provide both short and long self-learning modules. The GME Packs / Symposia are deemed as self education or continued professional development, therefore covered under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936, specifically self educational expenses section 51(1) and consolidated in the Taxation Ruling TR 98/9.

For the purposes of Part A of Taxation Ruling TR 98/9, self-education includes courses undertaken at an educational institution (whether leading to a formal qualification or not), attendance at work-related conferences or seminars, self-paced learning and study tours, including sabbatical (whether within Australia or overseas). Example: Francesco, a GP, has 2 equal purposes when he has a family holiday in Singapore for 10 days. He purchases a portable conference valued at $440, which is 5 hours in duration. The conference package is $2440 ($1,000 return air fare, $440 for the cost of the conference and $1,000 for accommodation and meals at the conference venue). Francesco paid another $2,000 for accommodation, meals and car hire for the other 5 days day of the holiday. Francesco is allowed a deduction of $1,440 for the conference cost and the accommodation and meals expenses at the conference. Only half of the return air fare ($500) is allowed as the expense was incurred for two equal purposes, one income-earning and the other private. The other expenditure of $2,000 relating to the holiday in Singapore is private in nature and not allowable as a deduction.

In most cases approprate travel and expenses related to attending a conference may be claimed as a deduction. We advise that you speak with your Accountant for further information and/or refer to the ATO website, a link is provided below.

According to the ATO you can claim the cost of attending seminars, conferences or education workshops that are sufficiently connected to your work activities. This can include formal education courses provided by professional associations.

As always, individual circumstances vary and customers should seek their own independent taxation advice.
